Lower back pain is the most common chronic pain disorder, with a prevalence of around 67% of all chronic pain. In the workers compensation space it accounts for many billions of dollars in direct payouts every year, in addition to lost productivity, and of course the suffering of the client, and the negative impact on family, friends, and community.
To date, no analgesic or other medication has been able to help the majority of sufferers, and neither has physical therapy (physical therapy is highly beneficial in the acute recovery phase, but once the pain has moved into the chronic phase, this is no longer the case).
Likewise CBT and other approaches have failed to have any significant effect, short or long term, according to meta-analyses.
