A Different, Evidence-Based Approach to Chronic Pain Treatment

Lifeworks Pain Clinic uses an approach to chronic pain treatment which actually switches off pain signalling. To make a booking, please click HERE.

HOW IS THIS TREATMENT DIFFERENT?

Current (but mostly ineffective) treatments include different types of medication  (analgesics, anti-inflammatories, anti-seizure, or mood modifiers), physical therapy, and CBT/mindfulness. NONE of these has any proof that they help at a higher level than placebo.

Although shocking, this is not surprising when you understand that true chronic pain is no longer being caused by the original injury/damage.

We approach treatment on the basis that pain signalling is modulated by conditioning of the nervous system, identical to classical conditioning processes. This approach is validated by updated studies which demonstrate that chronic pain signalling utilises very different nerve paths to those utilised by acute pain. In fact neuro-imaging of chronic pain “activity” shows clearly that chronic pain is almost indistinguishable from emotional pain. Chronic pain is expressed via the amygdala region, a further clue that chronic pain is “learned” by the nervous system, rather than being a product of mechanical, chemical, or temperature signals.

.

Using updated techniques to interrupt reconsolidation of conditioned responses (see Research here), we permanently extinguish the response and therefore the pain signalling. This is why we have achieved such outstanding results in our clinical trials, and continue to surprise clients with rapid improvements in their pain experiences.

.

BUT THIS IS NOT TO BE REGARDED AS A “MAGIC WAND”

This is not a “magic wand” treatment, even though typically we see dramatic reduction and even complete elimination of pain in the first session. We recommend that people practice at home for a few minutes each day, “switching off” the pain on a daily basis, in order to get permanent relief. Also, because there is generally an ecosystem of conditioned responses at play, associated with actual sensations of pain, beliefs about the pain, fears about the pain, stress from various causes, and pain linked to emotions, situations, and even other people or objects, it makes sense that thorough investigation and treatment may be required over a period of weeks, to ensure that outcomes are permanent.

This treatment is effective only with true chronic pain, and also with other brain-triggered issues such as anger, depression anxiety, addiction, etc). It is not effective to any significant degree with acute pain, even if that acute pain is long lasting.

.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER TREATMENT?

Some people will need very little follow up, and others will need continued support. With the latter, what we generally see is continued varying pain levels with continued flaring, However, charting reveals a downward trajectory, with lower pain, less flaring, lower levels of flare, less medication required, and greater return to role. This happens quite quickly for most people.

.

We teach our clients to self-treat, and provide support in one-to-one sessions and groups. We also offer very inexpensive online support in order to maintain strong personalised support and this is especially vital for clients who do not have the financial resources to continue with one-on-one sessions.

YOU ARE FAR FROM ALONE IF YOU SUFFER FROM CHRONIC PAIN

Today there are countless millions of people around the world who suffer from chronic pain and who can get little or no relief because current medications and strategies are not working for them, or are not working sufficiently. It is estimated that of the 20% of people suffering from chronic pain, approximately 80% are not getting relief or not getting sufficient relief to enable quality of life.

.

The issue of unresolved chronic pain is currently costing the Australian economy some $53 billion per annum. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is considered the gold standard treatment of choice for chronic pain. However there is little or no evidence that CBT provides any lasting benefit for chronic pain patients in the real world. The only empirical evidence in support of CBT is in relation to induced acute pain in a laboratory setting – utilising completely different nerve paths to those of chronic pain.

.
Our own clinical studies, including 2-year post-trial follow up, demonstrate that at least 80% of chronic pain sufferers can be helped, and that over 50% of them can achieve complete relief from their pain, often immediately.

.
“Christine, Andrew went back to university for the first time in months and has not missed a day since. Likewise he has returned to playing hockey. No more need for hospitalisation, and back to a normal life.” (Andrew’s pain team had been about to book him into hospital for a 2-week intensive medication and CBT treatment.)

.
There is a great need for this safer, easier, and more effective treatment to be made available to those who are suffering.

.
The treatment strategy which we teach is based on sound principles in relation to how chronic pain is produced by the brain and body, and works by interrupting reconsolidation of pain signalling and thereby extinguishing the conditioned responses which are producing the pain patterns.

.
“When we first started working together my pain level was constantly at 8 out of 10 even on medication, and I had had to resign from my job as a librarian. I also could not pick up my grandson and was very despondent. My pain level has dropped to 2 out of 10 at worst and I am off my medication. I have returned to work 3 days a week, and I am able to play with and pick up my grandson.” (This lady had suffered from back pain for many years and had been diagnosed with degenerated discs).

.
YOUR SAFETY AND WELLBEING ARE PARAMOUNT

Even though the methods shared on this site and in the recommended text seem simple and can be highly effective, it is crucial that you remain under the close care of your pain treatment team, including your doctor, so that changes can be accurately monitored, and any alteration of medication carried out in a safe and timely manner.

.
In addition, remember that other symptoms can arise during the treatment period, and should not be written off as merely part of the existing problem, nor as part of “healing”. In all cases, any new or different symptoms need to be reported in order that they be assessed by your qualified medical practitioner.

.
Finally, the resolution of chronic pain DOES NOT mean that the original cause of the pain has been treated. It has not, and the methods used are not “healing” methods, but methods which stop the creation of pain signalling in the brain and nervous system.

.
For example in the second testimonial above, the client had no change whatsoever to her degenerated discs. The only changes were that her pain was dramatically reduced and she was able to return to a life of quality.
